Ahh, how I don't miss the days of production companies giving all this hype over putting hard earned cash in their pockets /cough Troc /cough Mantis /cough. I think after that experience Ray and Jim have become gun-shy to any production company, but who would blame them, honestly.

Just remember fellas, you have to stick up for yourselves first, everyone else out there is looking to make a dime off your "sound", "appearance", "style" for their benefit. Be true to your music and what you stand for, hard work is always well payed off, if not for anyone but yourself.

Being a promoter I figured I would chime in on this topic. With Casa Bonita Productions, I am trying to put the best shows possible... However, I have heard of some horror stories from other bands about using this or that promotion company. I have been fortunate that alot of bands I have worked with (BxN included) have become repeat bookings of CBP events.

I think the biggest thing about being in this side of the business is that you have to be honest and not out to get the bands that are busting their ass to bring people into the venues... That's why I try all kinds of ways to promote bands. Internet Radio Shows and Promo CD's are just a few of the methods I use...(Also working on a radio station to put on my website and myspace page to promote bands that work with CBP, shows, ect...) I don't want to be a guy who is looking to make some cash. I want to help build the scene!!!! I also think it helps if the booking agent/promoter has been in a band before. Then they would think more on the bands mentality as well and that is a plus I think.

Have I told you guys that you kick ass!!!

Maybe we should start our own "production company" and call it PODUNK GIGS. "We know podunk."

But seriously.... one thing that I've been learning on this little adventure is that the internet and modern band networking, at least at our level, is removing the middle man. If you approach our band, you better be coming with a professional service because we are well within the means to "do it ourselves". Not all promotion companies are like what you're describing either... just the ones that fail. Word travels quick about shady venues and busted promotion "companies". You have to promote the artists.... period.

Wow. Sure seems like folks that call themselves "Production Companys" or "Entertainment Companys" these days have got a nice racket going. All you have to do is: 1)Secure a venue 2)Line up some bands 3)Put ALL the responsibility of the event's attendance on them 4)Post a few myspace bulletins and VIOLA....SHOW PROMOTION!!!!! WTF!! The trick these days seems to be: Get a reputable venue and use that to leverage bands to bring in the people in exchange for the PRIVILEDGE to play there. "Hey guys, i can get you in here, but you'll have to bring at least 100 people". Haven't we all heard that? Don't get me wrong, it is partly the band's responsibility to bring out heads......but ALL of them? Does the "production company" take any of this responibility? Sure seems like they've got a good system down that requires minimum work, yet they're all set to take a chunk of the money at the end of the night...GOTTA LOVE IT!!

Great question Jim, and I'm glad you posted. I find, less work is a definiet, plus the sound quality too. Put it this way, you want to do a Roll on the snare drum....you do it on one drum with the sticks, not 2 seperate drums right, I mean you can, but you might not get the same sound effect. Looking cooler is a def to it, but really, choice and money. Price for a decent double bass pedal, 250-500. Price for a decent Bass drum 500-2000 not including a decent pedal which will run you another 200-300.

Hmmm. Why do some drummers use (2) bass drums for double kick while other guys just use a single kick drum with the double pedal? faster? less stuff to set up? I figure there HAS to be a sound difference; or maybe it just looks cooler??? LOL

Okay to get more people posting on here, let's talk about drums. I've always been a fan of Yamaha Drums. Great tones, the mounting system is very unique, and they are all around good solid drums. I'm really surprised that most people don't use them. Now cymbals......that's another story. I've been know to break Zildjian, Sabians, and Paistes usually before the warranty runs out. Which is good cause it get's replaced for free. However I've gotten my endorsment by TRX cymbals. I should be getting the first set with in the next month or so. I've heard great reviews on them and they are made right here in the USA. They do have a great sound and I hear they last pretty long. So if you are a hard hitter like myself check them out. Sticks.....Vater's Morgan Rose series. I've broken the AHead Lars Ulrich sticks with in 2 months. The Morgan Rose sticks have lasted me about 5-6 months. Go figure right....wood vs metal. Everyone woman loves a good wood right. ANyways...post your thought...views on any thing you feel like about drum wise.

Peace
Ray

I'm not going to attempt to jump up on Ray's soapbox with him. However, in the short amount of time we've been together as a band, we sure have learned alot. In fact, it's almost clear to me why some of the big time bands act the way they do. It's absolutely amazing to me the kind of folks you meet in bands out there. I can TOTALLY understand why it seems like the big acts want no part of other bands, mostly because of the points Ray made in his first paragraph. It's tough to find good people you can trust and actually call your "friends". I can tell you this, as long as BXN is together, we will continue to NOT be "that band"; that band that dips early, that band that screws you for money, that band that is afraid to bring the intensity level down in their music because they are insecure, that band that thinks its cool to go out and cheat on their wives or girlfriends, that band that does drugs, that band that feels they need to write obnoxious and lewd lyrics to be cool....nah....we're just not "THAT BAND".

There's something I've been learning alot in this business. It's tough to please. A lot of bands seem to be out for them selves, and then you get those few who seem to really have the same mind set as you do. One thing I will say about BxN is, we try and keep it real. That saying, "Do onto others as you'd want them done to you" ....well it's really true. So many bands would rather just play, bring there people and bolt after they are done playing. Put it this way, one of your favorite bands is playing at a big venue and they have 3 other bands playing. Now you could show up a bit later and see the band you want or you could get your moneys worth and see a show of bands you've never seen before. Show support. You may not know the music so you might either like it or not. But not only did you get to see the band you liked but got to see some different music as well.

In fact that's another thing that really has been a misadventure in some places we've played. You got all these Cookie Montser screamo bands and like 2 other bands that STAND out from them....why....they sound nothing like everything else you heard all night. Which is good in some senses, but also can be bad. You get people who just want to hear the Scremo and when a band is heavy but singing instead of screaming it can go one way, or another. Then you get where you are the heavy ones playing to a bunch of Disney music channel lovers and EMO kids. Stop cutting your wrist and be original with your hair. The 80's it worked....now you're just annoying with it, because most EMO's are Socially Mal adjusted kids who don't know how to talk to people. Which if you think about it...it's very sad. I'm always game for kids these days to be themselves, but still show respect to everyone you meet. Some may be over the line with how they are, but hey, if they are being themselves that's all that matters. I'll tell you this much.....I'd rather teach 20 hanicapped kids the 5 emo kids. It's sad when handicapped children have more common sense then these EMO kids. Really point for them.

Now I'm just rambling on....trust me I could go all night and write a freaking Book...but I won't. Read it.....post your comments concerns, bashing and anything else you want and I'll get back to all of you shortly. Keep rocking

Ray
